This project was inspired by the Maximalism art movement, which is mostly recognized through its highly decorated, large-scale pieces. I found the beautiful intricacy of Islamic art styles inspiring, and incorporated them into the piece; this, in turn, made me realize the significance of using Islamic art as a Western designer during a time of great turmoil for many Islamic countries, noting also the response of fear and hatred that often arises out of my own country. The photograph is from an editorial piece by the New York Times and shows a mass of Syrians amidst the rubble of a city. I juxtaposed this with statistics about the Syrian refugee crisis, hidden into the layers of the poster. The large size of the piece allowed me to incorporate subtle pieces of information.
